Telephone carriers use Caller ID Name (also known as CNAM) to reveal a calling party’s name. CNAM can represent a person, business, or organization and is shown as a string text under 15 characters.
There a few things to be aware of regarding CNAM:
- CNAM lookup is not guaranteed to occur. Some carriers receiving a call may never look up CNAM. Some Customers may actually pay for an application on their phones to look up CNAM.
- CNAM lookup success is higher for local numbers than toll-free numbers. It can also take a few weeks for CNAM to apply. You can use public records for status on CNAM using websites like https://apeiron.io/cnam.
- There’s no fee for when a carrier in the US looks up your CNAM.
